What is a freeride snowboard?
Various terms are used to designate different boards. A freeride snowboard is characterized by its shape. Most Freeride-oriented snowboard have a directional shape. This means that the bindings are positioned towards the back. Consequently, you have a longer nose and a shorter tail. The advantage of this is that it allows you to better steer into a turn and carve on the well-prepared slopes. Additionally, freeride boards have a tapered tail. This means that the tail is narrower than the nose. A wide tip or nose stays afloat better in powder. Due to the narrower rear, you sink a bit deeper into the snow, allowing you to exert less pressure on your back leg to keep your board above the powder.
What characterizes a freeride snowboard?
A freeride snowboard is a board that performs well both on and off the slope. You can recognize a freeride snowboard by its shape. Almost all freeride boards have a directional shape. In addition to the longer nose, these boards usually also have a tapered tail. The tail is narrower than the nose/tip. A directional shape turns tighter on the slopes and provides more floatation in powder. The combination of a narrower tail and the fact that you stand further back on your snowboard means that the back of the board sinks slightly in the powder. This ensures that the nose stays well “afloat” and you have to exert less pressure on your back leg. And that makes a big difference for your legs!
Advantages of a freeride snowboard
A freeride snowboard offers numerous advantages for adventurous snowboarders who want to go off the beaten path. These specialized boards are designed to perform in unprepared snow and off-piste conditions.
The main advantage of a freeride snowboard is its excellent floatation in deep powder snow. With a wider nose and narrower tail, freeride snowboards can easily glide through deep snow, allowing you to effortlessly float and enjoy adrenaline-filled descents.
Freeride snowboards often have a stiffer and more responsive flex pattern, providing stability and control at high speeds and in rough terrain.
The design of a freeride snowboard also allows for maneuvering through trees and technical descents, giving you more opportunities to explore the terrain and take on new challenges.
Long and short freeride snowboards
Generally, you ride a freeride snowboard 2-4 cm longer than an all-mountain snowboard. Nowadays, you see more and more shorter freeride snowboards. You can ride these “short boards” shorter because they are wider. Short freeride snowboards are more maneuverable in powder and ideal for weaving between trees. You can also have a lot of fun on the slope with such a short freeride snowboard. Are you more into large and long turns and aiming for maximum speed? Then a long freeride snowboard is a good choice. A good option is the Jones Flagship. If you prefer a more playful ride and often find yourself near the edge of the slope, then a short freeride snowboard is a good choice. A fun example of this is the Bataleon partywave.
What is the ideal length of a freeride snowboard?
The ideal length of a freeride snowboard depends on various factors. An important aspect is your height and weight. Generally, freeride snowboards are ridden longer than, for example, an freestyle snowboard. If you are looking for a freeride snowboard with which you want to go full throttle on the slopes and prefer large, long turns, then choose a length that is +/- 2-4 cm longer than a all-mountain snowboard.
Nowadays, you'll also see many shorter freeride snowboards. These types of boards are specially designed to be ridden short. The boards are very maneuverable and have just as much floatation as a longer board because they are also wider to compensate for the length. These boards are ideal when you enjoy going through the trees.
When to choose a freeride snowboard?
We frequently receive the question of why you should choose a freeride snowboard instead of an all-mountain board. Let's put it straight: having fun on the mountain comes first. If you have a few weeks of experience and are the type of rider who loves maximum speed and prefers to ride off-piste? Do you usually ride with skiers and are rarely found in the fun park? Then a freeride snowboard is a suitable choice.
