Ready to start waxing your ski or snowboard?
We definitely recommend waxing your ski or snowboard yourself! You can choose which wax you use. In most shops, they wax your ski or snowboard with all-round wax. There’s nothing wrong with that, but if, for example, you go on a skiing trip late in the season, it’s advisable to use wax for warm conditions. Additionally, you can use an iron to get the melted wax deeper into the base, allowing you to apply multiple layers. The best all-round wax is Holmenkol Betamix. Would you like to start waxing snowboard? And wonder how to wax the board? We are happy to help you get started. We regularly hold waxing clinics in our snowboard shop. We also offer you the option to wax your snowboard together with us. We will explain step by step what it involves.
Holmenkol Liquid wax
Holmenkol has developed something new that makes waxing during your vacation a lot easier. Most liquid waxes are fine for a day. The brand has now launched a liquid variant of the popular Alpha, Beta, and Ultra mix. This liquid wax is easy to apply with a cloth. Unlike most liquid wax types, this one penetrates deeply into your base. After skiing or snowboarding, just apply it so it can soak in while you sleep. Just brush it out and your snowboard or ski is ready for another great day.
Holmenkol Betamix all temperature wax
The best-selling Holmenkol wax is the Betamix. This is a wax suitable for all temperatures and also serves as a good base. In principle, you could apply several layers of Betamix wax to a new snowboard or ski. Boards and skis come from the factory with minimal wax applied. So before you go into the snow for the first time with your new acquisition, you must wax it well. Once the base is well waxed, you can optionally apply a finish. To glide extra fast, you can apply a fluor layer with Holmenkol Racing Base LF21 wax.
Order for waxing ski or snowboard with Holmenkol
Waxing and sharpening your ski or snowboard yourself is, of course, a lot of fun. It increases your anticipation for winter sports. But what is the correct order? Very simple. You always start with sharpening your snowboard or ski.

- Secure your ski or snowboard tightly with the right clamps such as a Holmenkol Freeride Fix
- Check if there are burrs on the steel edge. You can do this by looking closely and also by feeling carefully. Do you feel any irregularities? Then you need to run the Oxyd mini along the steel edge. Place the pink stone in a file holder and let the stone slide along the steel edge. You will hear and feel when the irregularities are gone.
- Does the steel edge already have the correct angle? For example, 88° or 89°? Then it’s time to get it sharp again. Did you buy a new ski or snowboard? Then the angle is always 90°. You need to grind a new angle into it.
- If the steel edge has had a hard time during the winter sports, start with a coarser file. For example, a Holmenkol Racing File L Maxi. It goes without saying that you remove more steel edge with a coarse file than with a fine file.
- After sharpening with files, there will be sharpening burrs left on the steel edge. The steel edge may look sharp, and yes, if you run your nail along it, it will scrape off a layer of nail. To get it even sharper, use diamond files. Just like with the large files, you should always work from coarse to fine. A Medium diamond file is perfectly adequate.
- Don't forget to deburr the contact points after sharpening with a Holmenkol sharpening rubber. If you do not do this, you will notice that your ski or snowboard will catch when turning.

- Before you start waxing, the base needs to be clean. You can clean it with Holmenkol Waxab. This will remove dirt that would otherwise get pushed into your base with the wax.
- Check for any damages in your base. These can occur if you hit a rock, for example. You can fill these holes or cracks with Repair Strips.
- Before applying wax, first brush the base with a copper brush. This opens up the structure of the base so that it absorbs wax better. You do this every time before waxing.
- To remove old wax from your base, first apply a layer of soft wax. Think of Holmenkol Alpha Mix. This yellow wax performs best in the autumn when temperatures are higher. Additionally, you can use this wax to clean your base even deeper. Apply the wax with a waxing iron and spread it over your base. Scrape the wax off after 5 minutes of waxing to remove it from the bottom of your board or ski. The wax is still a little soft, which allows it to draw dirt from the pores of your base.
- Now you can apply the base layer with the Beta Mix. However, before applying this layer, you should brush again with the copper brush. Apply the wax and spread it over the base. Allow the wax to dry for at least half an hour, preferably a little longer.
- Once the wax has hardened, scrape off the excess wax from your board. You can do this with a Holmenkol Plexi blade, or simply a scraper. With your thumbs, push the scraper away from you lengthwise. Scrape until all the wax is removed from your base.
- When you're done applying multiple layers of wax, brush your base with a horsehair brush. This brush is softer than the copper brush. Brushing with the horsehair brush helps bring the structure back.
