Want to wax your skis or snowboard yourself?
We definitely recommend waxing your skis or snowboard yourself! You can decide which wax you use. In most shops they wax your skis or snowboard with allround wax. There's nothing wrong with that, but if, for example, you go on a winter holiday late in the season, it's advisable to use wax for warm conditions. Also, with an iron you can get the melted wax deeper into the base, allowing you to apply multiple layers. The best allround wax is Holmenkol Betamix. Want to start snowboard waxing? And wondering how to wax the board? We are happy to help. We regularly run wax clinics in our snowboard shop. We also offer the opportunity to wax your snowboard together with us. We'll explain step by step what is involved.

Holmenkol Liquid wax
Holmenkol has developed something new that makes waxing during your holiday a lot easier. Most liquid waxes are fine for a day. The brand has now brought a liquid variant of the popular Alpha, Beta and Ultra mix to the market. You apply this liquid wax easily with a cloth. Unlike most liquid wax types, this one does penetrate deeply into your base. After skiing or snowboarding apply it briefly so it can soak in well while you sleep. Brush out and your snowboard or skis are ready for another great day.
Holmenkol Betamix all temperature wax
The best-selling Holmenkol wax is the Betamix. This is a wax suitable for all temperatures and also serves as a good base. In principle, for a new snowboard or skis you could apply several layers of Betamix wax. From the factory the boards and skis are minimally waxed. So before you go into the snow for the first time with your new purchase you should wax properly first. After the base has absorbed the wax well you can optionally apply a finish. To glide even faster you can apply a fluor layer with Holmenkol Racing Base LF21 wax.
Order for ski or snowboard waxing with Holmenkol
Waxing and tuning your skis or snowboard yourself is of course great fun. It increases your winter-sport anticipation. But what is the correct order? Very simple. You always start by tuning the edges of your snowboard or skis.

- Secure your skis or snowboard properly with the right clamps such as a Holmenkol Freeride Fix
- Check for burrs on the steel edge. You do this by looking carefully but also by feeling. Do you feel irregularities? Then go along the steel edge with the Oxyd mini. Put the pink stone in a file holder and let the stone glide along the steel edge. You will hear and feel when the irregularities are gone.
- Does the steel edge already have the correct angle? For example 88° or 89°? Then the goal is to get it sharp now. If you bought a new ski or snowboard, the angle is always 90°. You then need to file a new angle into it.
- If the steel edge has taken a beating during the winter sports trip, start with a coarser file. For example a Holmenkol Racing File L Maxi. It goes without saying that a coarser file removes more steel edge than a fine file.
- After evening out the steel edge and removing the irregularities you should repeat the process but with a finer file such as the Holmenkol Racing File M Maxi
- After filing with files there remain filing burrs on the steel edge. The edge may seem sharp and yes, if you run your nail along it the edge will scrape a layer off your nail. You make it even sharper with diamond files. As with the large files you should always apply from coarse to fine. A Medium diamond file is usually sufficient.
- Don't forget to deburr the contact points after tuning with a Holmenkol Schleifgummi. If you don't do this you will notice that your skis or snowboard will chatter when initiating a turn.

- Before you start waxing, the base must be clean. You can clean it with Holmenkol Waxab. This removes dirt that you would otherwise push into your base with wax.
- Check for damage in your base. These can occur when you e.g. hit a rock. You can fill these holes or cracks with Repair Strips
- Before applying wax brush the base with a copper brush. This opens the structure of the base so it absorbs wax better. Do this every time before waxing.
- To remove old wax from your base first apply a layer of soft wax. Think of Holmenkol Alpha Mix. This yellow wax performs best in the autumn when temperatures are higher. You can also use this wax excellently to clean your base even deeper. Apply the wax with a waxing iron and spread it over your base. Scrape the wax off the bottom of your board or skis after 5 minutes of waxing. The wax is still a little soft so it pulls dirt from the pores of your base.
- Now you can apply the base layer with the Beta Mix. But before applying this layer you should brush again with the copper brush. Apply the wax and spread it over the base. Let the wax dry for at least half an hour. Preferably a bit longer.
- When the wax has hardened well you should scrape the excess wax from your board. Do this with a Holmenkol Plexiklinge or scraper. With your thumbs push the scraper away from you in the lengthwise direction. Scrape until all wax is removed from your base.
- Finished applying multiple layers of wax? Then brush your base with a horsehair brush. This brush is softer than the copper brush. Brushing with the horsehair brush brings the structure back to the surface.
